Wanting to know more about this man, Tellychakkar.com got into a chat with Rajan for our ‘Behind the Lens’ section.
How did your journey in this industry begin?
I am from a small town in Jharkhand. I always aspired to become an actor but destiny has some different plans for me. Since childhood, I had decided not to take care of my dad’s business but make something of my own. I was always star-struck and dreamt to be in a big city like Mumbai to chase my dreams. But obviously things don’t happen the way you wish. Before working in BBC, I worked for DD1 projects and also directed some theater acts. Later things started falling into place and now it’s been more than four years that I am working as a casting director.
Tell us something about your work pattern?
For episodic and daily, we get character descriptions of a role on whose basis I first imagine the actor who will look best for that particular role. Then I discuss about the actor and his availability with my creative team. Once the casting is done, it is upon the producer and channel to take the final call.
What challenges did you face in this industry?
I have faced lot of difficulties in the initial days of my career. My parents never supported my shift to Mumbai as they wanted me to join the family business. I came to this metro city without anyone’s help. There were times when I had no money in my pocket and food to eat. But I am a very positive person. I think if you work hard and be optimistic, you can achieve anything!
What are the things that you keep in mind before casting for a particular show?
Obviously, look is the first thing that we see in any actor. Then that actor should have good acting skills and should fit into the role. After that, there are auditions and lastly, the budget and date part comes into the picture
Your favourite actor and actress that you wish to cast in the future?
I would love to cast Varun Badola one day for my future project. He is a very flamboyant actor. He is very friendly and loving person.
Who has inspired you in your journey?
I am a huge fan of Akshay Kumar. In fact, I have same disciplined lifestyle like him in real life. I am early to bed and early to rise person. I make sure to exercise regularly. I also practice martial arts to stay fit.
Which show do you think has the best cast?
I think Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan has the best cast till date.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself acting and producing films in the future.
